Windsurfing is a wind-powered water sport, a combination of sailing and surfing, also known as sailboarding and boardsail. It emerged from California's aerospace and surfing culture in the late 1960s and gained widespread popularity in Europe and North America by the late 1970s. By the 1980s, it had gained significant global popularity. In 1984, windsurfing became an Olympic sport.

Newer variants include windfoiling, kiteboarding and wingfoiling. Hydrofoil fins under the boards allow the boards to stay safely out of the water and fly quietly and smoothly above the water even in light winds.

Windsurfing is a recreational, family-friendly sport, most popular in flat waters around the world, providing beginners and intermediate participants with safe and accessible sports techniques and equipment that have been improved over the years.

The IQfoil class is the new windsurfing racing class for the 2024 Olympic Games in France.
